JAMB to Investigate Every UTME Candidate from 2009-2019 for Malpractice

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has launched an investigation into the credentials of applicants dating back to 2009. This means that every single candidate who took UTME within the last 10 years will be scrutinized. Persons who cheated the system successfully, and went on to secure admission and may have even graduated will face prosecution and their certificates will be withdrawn.

This was disclosed by JAMB's Head of Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin, during an interview with Punch on Monday. He said the probe had begun and it would be completed in a short time as JAMB had acquired software to identify fake biometric data.

Benjamin said, “If you graduated from university and you did not take UTME, it means the foundation is faulty and the building cannot stand. We have already started the probe but we will go deeper after the exams."

“It will not take too long. We are using software, so it will just check the biometric data of candidates and if the biometric data of someone shows about six different names, then it will notify us. So, if one person’s photo brings up different names and we have spotted this, we will find out where the person is and then we will pick them up.”

Speaking in a separate interview on 95.1 Nigeria Info FM Abuja, the JAMB spokesman said,

“We want to do what we call biometric verification dating 10 years back. Even if you are now working and we discovered that someone wrote exams for you, we will publish your name and the law agencies will do the needful. We have the biometric data from 10 years ago. We will compare the photos with thumbprints and names. We discovered that a candidate could have taken exams with 30 different names.”

The JAMB spokesman said it had become important to expose exam cheats to serve as a deterrent to others. He said the photos of those found culpable would be published for all to see even if they were now working class persons.

Buhari Not Asleep, Garba Shehu Replies Catholic Bishop

"There is so much that has changed in the past three to four years in and around Yola, and the Catholic Church in particular that a true assessment would show that, but for the change administration of President Buhari, things would have continued the way they were, or even get worse. These could not have happened if a Commander-in- Chief was asleep,” he said.

JAMB Moves Printing Of 2019 UTME Slip To April 4th

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board has postponed the printing of UTME slip to Thursday April 4th, 2019. This was disclosed by the JAMB's Head of Media and Publicity Dr Fabian Benjamin in an interview with newsmen. Recall that the printing of the examination slips was initially scheduled to begin on Tuesday, April 2.

According to Benjamin, the postponement follows the suspension of 14 Computer-Based Tests centres due to irregluarities during the conduct of Mock UTME, including an incident where JAMB staff were attacked at one of its centres.

He said in view of this, the board needed today and tomorrow to redistribute the candidates affected by these suspended centres who had planned to extort them, defraud and frustrate the system, to centres that are more suitable after which the printing of exam slip can begin on Thursday.

He apologised to all candidates of the examination for the inconvenience caused, adding that the board’s intention remained to give its best and ensure a hitch-free and successful exercise.

Senate Committee Misses Deadline For Submitting Report On 2019 Budget

"Any Committee that refuses to submit its Report by Friday, we will empower the Committee to go with the Executive submission."

The Senate Committee on Appropriations has failed to submit its report on the 2019 budget.

At the plenary on Tuesday, where the report was scheduled to be presented, Senate President Bukola Saraki called on the committee to tell the Senate why the report on the budget was not ready.

Addressing the matter, Senator Sunday Ogbuoji, Deputy Chairman of the Committee, said the report was not ready because some committees were yet to submit their reports.

According to Ogbuoji, less than 10 committees had submitted their reports.

He, however, issued an ultimatum to the committees, stating that for any committee that fails to submit its report by Friday, the Senate Committee on Appropriations would go with the submission of the executive.

“Our report is not ready because some Committees are yet to submit their reports. For now we have less than 10 Committees that have submitted. Any Committee that refuses to submit its Report by Friday, we will empower the Committee to go with the Executive submission,” Ogbuoji said.

Thereafter, Senate President Bukola Saraki suspended the plenary till April 9, 2019, and said the report should be ready by Friday, April 5, 2019.

Japanese Government Releases $1.5m Towards Rebuilding Nigeria's North-East

The interventions being implemented in the region are aimed at supporting victims of Boko Haram insurgency in the three most affected states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

The Government of Japan has released $1.5million to fund community stabilisation activities in the North-East region of Nigeria.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, the funds would be utilised through an ongoing programme launched in 2016 and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Nigeria.

The interventions being implemented in the region are aimed at supporting victims of Boko Haram insurgency in the three most affected states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

According to the statement, the recent release of funds “builds on ongoing activities that the Government of Japan has been supporting which have facilitated the rehabilitation of 20 public infrastructures and provided emergency employment to more than 2,000 Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and returnees".

Also, more than 4,000 farmers and over 1,000 small businesses have received support with inputs and capital that helped improve and expand their sources of livelihood. The Government of Japan has already invested $6.5million in stabilisation activities in Nigeria’s North-East.

The funding from the Japanese government would be utilised within the framework of Integrated Community Stabilization Programme which UNDP has been implementing in the region intended to directly benefit 125,000 people in the three states. An additional one million people will indirectly benefit from interventions under the project. Implemented through an integrated approach, the project’s goal is to support over 2,200 farmers, 500 small businesses, five community public infrastructures, and provide emergency employment to over 850 community members.

Speaking on the activities in the region, Khardiata Lo Ndiaye, acting UNDP Resident Representative, said: “Stabilization efforts in the North-East are helping families and communities begin to rely less on humanitarian aid and more on themselves. This support from the Government of Japan will go a long way in laying a foundation for development to take place again in the region.”

Ms. Khardiata added that meeting urgent early recovery needs of the crisis-affected communities remained a huge challenge requiring more partners and investment.

In his remarks, Shigeru Umetsu, Chargé d’affaires ad interim of Japan to Nigeria, gave the assurance that the Government of Japan would continue to support efforts aimed at restoring stability and livelihoods for the communities in the North-East.
