Why Smartphones Overheat, and How to Stop it...

Smartphones will warm up from the moment you switch them on; this is unavoidable and mostly safe. But phone overheating can be a serious issue, damaging devices and affecting performance. In this article, we address three important questions: what causes a smartphone to heat up, what causes it to overheat, and how can it be avoided?

Why do smartphones heat up?
The answer lies in a basic property of physics: movement generates heat. Our smartphones have to physically move things around to work at all, so they have to generate heat. The amount of heat your smartphone produces is largely proportional to the amount of electricity moving through it.

If you’re playing a game that demands a lot from your central and graphics processing units, both housed in a central system-on-a-chip (SoC), they will become warm, as they require more power to carry out their tasks.

Your phone becoming warm is no reason to worry, they’re designed to work that way, but if it becomes unpleasantly hot, you probably have cause for concern.

Why do smartphones overheat?

Generally speaking, SoCs are extremely well optimized, and overheating is rarely an issue. They are specifically designed to handle high temperatures. When your device approaches a potentially damaging temperature, the processor speed will be reduced, making slower operating speeds one of the signs of overheating; under more severe circumstances, a warning will be displayed, preventing you from using the device until it has cooled.

If your device is experiencing frequent overheating, it could be for a number of solvable reasons, mostly related to overloading the hardware. Pushing your GPU for too long is one of the quickest ways to overheat your phone (as anyone who has tried a Gear VR knows all too well).

The same can happen with demanding apps, but the burden will here fall on the CPU. Multitasking, extra features and functions, like widgets, and, for whatever reason, your phone having to check its connectivity – be it Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, whatever – all require processing power – warming the SoC – and more electricity – warming the battery.

Other factors that can lead to overheating are external: leaving your smartphone out in direct sunlight, for example, or throwing it into the oven. If you don’t overexert your phone and it still overheats to excess regularly, it could well be a hardware malfunction, and it would be worth trying to score a replacement.

There is no better example of poorly optimized hardware leading to overheating issues than the infamous Snapdragon 810. This was the flagship processor of 2015, and was featured in nigh-on every flagship device. From the very start it was plagued with rumors of overheating issues, and, while performance varied from device to device, the chip certainly throttled its processing speeds heavily and frequently to avoid overheating, leading to slower performance.

While there are safety checks in place, and most phones don’t suffer from frequent overheating, when it does happen regularly or to extremes, the heat can damage your device.

What damage can be done?

Battery

Inside modern smartphones, you will find a lithium-ion battery. These are clever tricks of technology. A non-rechargeable battery only allows for a chemical reaction, designed to generate electricity, to happen in one direction: electrons leave the battery to travel through a circuit (your phone). Rechargeable batteries allow this reaction to go both ways, so the battery can give and take charge, and do it hundreds of times.

Lithium-ion batteries are the best rechargeable batteries available at the moment, but they still have disadvantages. There are two main problems:

One is that they degrade, even when they’re not used. This happens relatively slowly, but you’re still lucky to drag two or three years of use out of one.

Secondly, they are very sensitive to heat. Anything over about 30 degrees centigrade is going to start negatively impacting a lithium-ion battery, and this is a temperature it probably climbs above every time you charge it.

The main impact heat has on the battery is that it speeds up its degradation and thus more rapidly reduces its capacity, leaving you with a dead battery sooner.

One of the most dramatic overheating symptoms is that it can cause a lithium-ion battery to explode. Although we’ve all read the horror stories in the press, the chances of a battery exploding are very slim.

For it to happen, there needs to be a thermal runaway, a vicious feedback loop, where a rise in temperature increases the reaction rate, which in turn further increases the temperature, and so on.

This process requires there to be either an internal malfunction, which is usually managed by a circuit breaker, or extreme external conditions (throwing it into a fire, for example). For a battery to explode, you will need to get it above 200 degrees Celsius, a very unusual thing to have happen in everyday life.

System-on-a-chip
When it comes to the SoC, the processor speed will be throttled to prevent overheating, which slows your device down, sometimes to the point of unusability. If there is too much heat for too long, it can damage the chip physically.

Again, as with the battery, this latter possibility is unlikely to happen, as there are safety measures in place.
But even so, it can be concerning to feel excessive heat, and annoying to have to wait for your device to cool down. Some devices are prone to overheating (I’m looking at you), but it is unusual, otherwise.

2019 UTME: 19-Year-Old Arrested For Upgrading UTME Score - JAMB

A 19-year-old 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidate identfied as Adah Eche, has been exposed by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for allegedly falsifying his UTME result. The candidate was reportedly paraded by the board's Registrar, Prof.Is-haq Oloyede, before newsmen at the JAMB's Headquarters in Bwari, Abuja.

Adah was said to have originally scored 153 in his UTME but paid an unknown individual the sum of N5,000 to upgrade his score to 290. The Registrar who disclosed this, revealed that the candidate was apprehended by the board, following a visit by a delegation of Public Complaints Commission regarding various complaints by aggrieved candidates who sat for the 2019 UTME.
2019 UTME: 19-Year-Old Arrested For Upgrading UTME Score - JAMB

The letter of complaint written by the candidate to the board concerning his results was one of the three issues the board had chosen to address first. It was then discovered that he had checked his result three consecutive times via 55019 and was replied same with his original result which is 153, yet he insists that he did not know the one with 290 was fake.

Adah Eche, who said that he wrote his UTME at Veritas University Centre, Bwari, also said that he was writing the examination for the first time. According to him, his result was delayed and was not released on time, so he posted on Facebook that he had not seen his result and another Facebook user decided to assist him to get the result.

The candidate maintained that he had never met the man he paid, but decided to pay after he was promised that he can be assited in getting his results.

The candidate later confessed to paying to upgrade his results, after many evidences were discovered from his phone and another on his computer where he faked 200 score for himself first, before upgrading it to 290. It was aslo discovered that the candidate had collected money from others and sent to his counterpart for the upgrade of UTME scores.

“He was collecting money from others, we have the transactions on his phone where some send N5000, seeking assistance and sending him their registration number, email addresses and all necessary details to help upgrade their scores, " Oloyede said.

Court Gives Buhari 5 Days To Respond To Alleged Certificate Fraud

C

The appellants in their appeal are asking the appellate court to reverse the judgment of Justice Ahmed Mohammed on the grounds that the processes filed by Buhari and used to strike out their suit were not competent.

The Court of Appeal Abuja division on Monday ordered President Muhammadu Buhari to respond within five days to the appeal filed against his qualification for the 2019 presidential election.

The court also ordered the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to within five respond to all issues raised on the educational qualification of the president in the election.

Justice Datti Yayaya who issued the order also directed that Buhari’s counsel, Mr. Abdullahi Abubakar, to within the period file necessary processes in relation to the appeal.

The appeal was filed by Agu Kalu, Labaran Ismail, and Hassy El-Kuris.

The decision of the appellate court was sequel to a motion on notice filed by counsel to the appellants, Mr. Uchenna Ndubuisi.

Ndubuisi prayed the Court of Appeal in the motion to abridge within which Buhari, APC, and INEC will join issues with the appellants on the certificate suit.

Abubakar and Mr. Temitayo Lasaki counsel for APC had urged the appellate court in their response to the motion to give them five days to enable them to file their respondents’ brief of argument along with other processes so as to set the stage for the hearing of the substantive appeal.

Kalu, Ismail, and El-Kuris had approached the appellate court to nullify and set aside the Judgment of the Abuja division of the Federal High Court.

The lower court had declined to hear their suit instituted to challenge the educational qualification of President Buhari before the conduct of the 2019 general election.

The appellants in their appeal are asking the appellate court to reverse the judgment of Justice Ahmed Mohammed on the grounds that the processes filed by Buhari and used to strike out their suit were not competent.

While faulting the Judgment of the High Court, which was predicated on the grounds that the suit was statute barred, the appellants claimed that the Federal High Court erred in law and in its decision.

This they said was because they did not challenge the primary election that produced Buhari as the candidate of the APC.

They, therefore, urged the Court of Appeal to assume jurisdiction over the suit and grant all the reliefs sought at the Federal High Court but which were refused.

Among the reliefs were a declaration that Buhari submitted false information regarding his qualification and certificate to INEC for the purpose of contesting election into the office of the President of Nigeria and that he should be disqualified.

They also prayed for an order of the court directing INEC to remove Buhari’s name as a candidate of APC.

Also, an order restraining Buhari from parading himself as a candidate in the 2019 presidential election and also APC from recognizing Buhari as a candidate.

The Federal High Court had on May 2 declined to grant the request of the appellants on the grounds that the suit was not filed within the time allowed by law and therefore sustained the preliminary objection raised by Buhari at the hearing.

But not satisfied, the appellants are now asking the Court of Appeal to grant their reliefs because they are not challenging the primary election of APC as erroneously held by the lower court.

They said they are challenging the qualification of Buhari to stand for the presidential election without demonstrating his educational certificates as required by law.

July 8 was fixed for hearing of the appeal, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Drug Abuse Education In Nigerian Schools Not Enough To Help Teenagers, Says Group

Her counterpart at De Victory International School, Abubakar Kigo Road, Anaekwe Kenneth, said the school teaches drug abuse as part of Basic Science in the junior secondary school.

A group, Reclaiming Futures in Northern Nigeria (REFINN), has said drug abuse education in Nigerian Schools is not sufficient to help teenagers who are most vulnerable to the scourge.

The group, which is a project of four alumni of the United States-sponsored International Visitors Leadership Programme (IVLP), made the revelation after a one-week training workshop in Kaduna state.

The workshop, according to McBishop Ogueji, coordinator of the project, is a preventive education programme to equip the teenagers with life skills required to deal with their vulnerabilities and avoid turning to drugs.

Experiences

Some students who participated in the workshop spoke on their exposure to the subject of drug abuse.

Sharing her experience, Stella Danjuma, a final-year student of Government Girls Secondary School, Kabala Costain, said she had never heard about the names of drugs commonly abused by youths and what the drugs do to the human body.

She revealed that her school talks generally to the students on drug abuse occasionally during assembly time in the morning before classes begin.

Her counterpart at De Victory International School, Abubakar Kigo Road, Anaekwe Kenneth, said the school teaches drug abuse as part of Basic Science in the junior secondary school.

“But we’ve never heard about the names of these drugs and their effects on the body, especially the brain,” he said.

REFINN noted that none of the 80 senior secondary school students selected from different schools in the state capital could explain properly the negative effects of drug abuse.

And while most of them could define drug abuse, they had no clue about addiction and the dangers it poses, or how to fight motivation for drug use.

The group which is sponsored by the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund of the US Department of State with support from the US Embassy in Nigeria called on stakeholders to do more in ensuring drug abuse education in all Nigerian Schools.

Rape Of 2-year-old: Court Sends Chrisland Supervisor Back To Prison

When the case came up for hearing on Tuesday, the presiding judge revoked Adenekan's bail just as he concluded giving his testimony against the allegations levelled against him.

Justice Sybil Nwaka of the Special Offences Court Ikeja, Lagos has revoked the bail granted to Adegboyega Adenekan, a supervisor at Chrisland School, VGC, Lekki, Lagos.

Adegboyega was accused of defiling a two-year-old pupil of the school.

The little child gave a detailed description of how Adegboyega had defiled her.

The 47-year-old supervisor was arraigned before the Court in January 2018.

According to Titilayo Shitta-Bey, the state Director of Public Prosecution, the defendant committed the crime in November 2016.

The child had given a detailed description of how Adegboyega had defiled her in an interview with Adenike Ayanleye, the Police investigative officer in charge of the case. The police officer told the court: "The child took us upstairs to the defendant's office. She identified his seat out of three seats in the room and she identified the restroom in the office where the said incident happened."

In a video clip of the interview he had with the child shown to the court, the little girl said the supervisor put his "wee wee" in her "wee wee" two times.

However, Adeola Adebola, Deputy Headteacher of Chrisland School, said the mother tutored the 2-year-old on what to say.

She claimed that when the school interrogated the child, she took them to open space where such action could not have happened.

“When we got to the place where we have our assembly, she said, 'This is the place'. "Her mother was visibly embarrassed and we were shocked. The mother said to her that there was another place she told her, and the girl looked at her and started walking toward the canteen area. We got there and it is a more open place, and the child said, 'This is the place', and her mother got more jittery. These areas the child showed us are open and very busy with people going out and coming in,” Adebola said at the time.

However, when the case came up for hearing on Tuesday, the presiding judge revoked Adenekan's bail just as he concluded giving his testimony against the allegations levelled against him.

Buhari, APC Have Shown South-east Is Not Part Of Nigeria, Says CSEY

The decision of the APC not to support or zone any principal position in the National Assembly to the South-east is a clear indication and statement by the APC that the South-east is no longer part of Nigeria.

The Coalition of South-East Youths has berated the All Progressives Congress for excluding the zone in the sharing of principal positions in the National Assembly.

The coalition, in a statement on Wednesday by its President, Mr. Goodluck Ibem, called on the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari to take urgent steps to redress the alleged injustice.

Ibem said the party’s decision to exclude the zone was a declaration of a political war against the Igbos.

The statement read, “The decision of the APC not to support or zone any principal position in the National Assembly to the South-east is a clear indication and statement by the APC that the South-east is no longer part of Nigeria.

“The North produced the President, the President of the Senate, the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“The South-West also produced the APC National Leader, the Vice President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“The South-south produced the party’s national chairman and the deputy senate president while the South-East is left with nothing.

“The APC has just told its South-east members that they are not qualified for any good thing from the party.”

Ibem insisted that the action of the APC against the South-east was an aberration and a travesty of the Nigerian Constitution.

“The action of the APC against the South-East contradicts the visions of our founding fathers who agreed and came together in harmony to work in unity as one united Nigeria”, he added.

Girl Commits Suicide Over Parents' Divorce

Amina Shehu, mother of the victim said the late Sadiya was shocked when she heard her father said he was quitting the marriage.

Shehu Sadiya, a 17-year-old girl, has killed herself over a disagreement that broke out between her parents that led to her father deciding to divorce her mother.

Sadiya, who hailed from Tudun Murtala quarters, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, killed herself on Monday by taking insecticide.

It was gathered that the deceased begged her father to rescind on his decision but she took her own life as her father was bent on divorcing her mother.

When reporters visited, the house of the deceased was filled with sympathizers who were condoling with the bereaved family.

Amina Shehu, mother of the victim said the late Sadiya was shocked when she heard her father said he was quitting the marriage.

Narrating what led to the divorce, Amina said, "trouble started when one Maryam, my Maryam, my husband's niece was beating Sadiya's younger brother and my former husband decided to side with his niece to punish the boy the more.

“Maryam was fighting with my son, Daddy, because according to her, he had used a vulgar language on her.

“When his father came out from the bathroom, he started beating him mercilessly and I couldn’t contain that, so I told him that the punishment was too severe even if he actually committed the offence against the girl. My husband asked me to keep quiet and I told him that I wouldn't since no one else was helping to save my son.

“I said after all, even if he abused the girl, he learn to use abusive language from the family. My former husband got angry and said he had divorced me in the presence of the deceased.

“When he said I should go, that I am divorced, the deceased knelt down and started begging him that he shouldn’t let me go, because they would be in trouble if I leave.

“The following day, after I had packed my luggage, I realized that she was not in a happy mood. I told her that if it was as a result of the problem, she shouldn’t mind because everything was over as far as I was concerned.

“She went into the room and drank that insecticide and died. Sadiya was buried on Monday according to Islamic rites,” mother of the deceased explained.

On his part, Shehu Lawan, father of the deceased said he only had a little disagreement with Sadiya’s mother and it was settled the same day.

“I had a problem with her mother over which she was not happy. She was crying and I told her that everything was over.

“I woke up early and left Sadiya and her siblings hale and hearty but unfortunately, while I was at my place of work, I received a call that she was rushed to hospital. The doctors tried their best to revive her but, as Allah had decreed, she passed away,” he said.

Police spokesperson in the state, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, told reporters that the command was yet to receive report on the suicide, but promised to find out from the DPO of the area.
